چکیده

The effect of forced near-inertial motion on the kinetic energy budget of a turbulent, geostrophic background flow is examined using a primitive equation ocean circulation model. Balanced and unbalanced parts of the flow are taken to be equivalent to lowand high-passed filtered versions of the model fields, and the Reynolds stresses associated with the high-passed, predominantly near-inertial part of the flow are found to extract low frequency kinetic energy. Transfer spectra show that this transfer occurs at wavenumbers close to the deformation wavenumber, ie, at mesoscale wavenumbers. Whether or not this “advective sink” results in a reduction of low frequency kinetic energy is found to be sensitive to model resolution and to a pressure work term which is peaked a higher horizontal wavenumber and transfers energy between the balanced potential and kinetic energy pools.

Ocean Circulation Kinetic Energy: Reservoirs, Sources, and Sinks

The ocean circulation is a cause and consequence of fluid scale interactions from millimeters to 10,000km. Although the wind field produces a large energy input to the ocean, all but about 10% appears to be dissipated within about 100m of the sea surface, rendering very difficult observations of the energy divergence necessary to maintain the full water column flow. Attention thus shifts to the...

Modification of inertial oscillations by the mesoscale eddy field

[1] The modification of near‐surface near‐inertial oscillations (NIOs) by the geostrophic vorticity is studied globally from an observational standpoint. Surface drifter are used to estimate NIO characteristics. Despite its spatial resolution limits, altimetry is used to estimate the geostrophic vorticity. Three characteristics of NIOs are considered: the relative frequency shift with respect t...

Analysis of Kinetic Chain Mechanism Affecting Energy Flow in Kick Topspin Tennis Serve in Elite and Amateur Tennis Players

Background. Effective kick-topspin serving in tennis requires power to transfer mechanical energy through a kinematic chain from different parts of the body that is directly related to the kinetics of the joints. Energy flow analysis is a powerful tool for observing the mechanical energy transfer through the body parts. Objectives. This research aimed to study the correlation and predictive ab...

The decay of kinetic helicity is studied in numerical models of forced turbulence using either an externally imposed forcing function as an inhomogeneous term in the equations or, alternatively, a term linear in the velocity giving rise to a linear instability. The externally imposed forcing function injects energy at the largest scales, giving rise to a turbulent inertial range with nearly con...
